Are CPA exam fees tax deductible or can you get a tax credit for amounts paid?
Hi, I was wondering if there was anywhere where i can use the fees paid to take the CPA exam on my income tax form.
I am already in the accounting profession and the CPA license is required to advance in my job.
Haha, I had a co-worker wondering the same Q, yes it is deductible, but I think it’s classified as a misc. deductible, either as an edu expense or business exp; So I think it’s subject to the 2.5% floor of your AGI.
Something about expenses on improving skills that enable to further in your profession.
Also note that if you get reimbursement from your employer, you would not be able to deduct this expense.
What states do not require experience in order to get a CPA license?
I am looking to sit for the CPA exam. I have a Masters degree. I don’t want to be locked into having to work for a CPA firm but want my CPA license. Which states don’t require work experience and what is the link to the State Board web site please?
I’m in Massachusetts, and you can get your license here without any experience. You will not be able to sign financial statements until you get experience, or take a lot of CPE’s but you can call yourself a CPA after you pass the exam, and application process.

From the FAQ on the society website:
What is the experience requirement for CPA certification?
It depends on your level of education. With 150 credits, you need one year of public accounting experience. With a graduate degree in accounting, business, or law, no experience is required for certification.
I hope that helps.
Good luck on the exam.
What section in the CPA Exam is the best one to take first?
I plan on taking the CPA Exam soon. I am wondering if it is good idea to take the hardest part/section. For me, the hardest part is the Regulation. Is this good idea to take the hardest part first or the easiest? Thank you!
If you are relatively confident in your abilities, then taking what you perceive as your weakest area first can be a real boost. Most people tend to over-study for their first section as well. That can help lead to a positive result. The down side is if you do not score a 75. If that happens, you will be taking all of the others knowing that you will have to take the first one again.
With that being said, I also chose what I thought was my weakest area (REG) first. With my score returned as an 85 it gave me all of the confidence in the world for the other three.
In my opinion, the sections from hardest to easiest are: FAR, REG, BEC, AUD. FAR simply has so much material that can be covered. You almost have to pick your poison and know that you will not know some parts of that section. As an auditor with PwC, AUD was by far the easiest. REG was not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. BEC was also pretty easy by comparison.
Hardest section first or easiest section first, make sure you do everything possible to prepare for it. Taking a few extra hours now and over studying can save you many hours if you get the dreaded 74! I know people that have taken the exams both ways with success and without initial success. From talking to each of them I have decided that it was all in the preparation.
I took them in the following order: REG, AUD, FAR, BEC. My perception was to go hard/easy/hard/easy. It worked for me and if you put in the work, it can work for you too. Schedule your exams well in advance and set a time every day to study. There is far too much material to ‘cram’ for in any section.
Best of Luck!
How can I find a list of all states requirements for cpa exam?

I would like to become a CPA. What are some ways to best prepare myself while in college?
I know all the requirements to become a CPA, but I am just looking for certain tips that a CPA could give me, or someone that knows a CPA. thanks.
I was a CPA for a couple of years. One thing I would do if offered it is to take governmental accounting. I didn’t hear anything about it until the CPA review class good thing it was with cost accounting on the test or I wouldn’t have passed.
Only take the exam once, it isn’t any fun and would probably be less fun if you had to do it over. I promised myself a boat for passing my first try. Every time I didn’t want to study another hour I told myself no boat and you need to study more months and wait for results again if you don’t pass. Work in a CPA firm while in college the experience will help with the test and you might count some of it as experience when you are done. I was able to get licensed as soon as I got my test results.
Take a review class they are worth the money. I got mine half price because I set up the room and cleaned up after class but full price is worth it too.
What is the diffence between a CPA and a Chartered Accountant?
Where I am from (New Zealand) we have chartered accountants but not cpa’s. What is the difference and how long does it take become a CA and CPA. Which countries do the have CPA’s in.
and is it difficult to become either of them?
They’re almost the same thing. NZ has a Chatered Accountant and the US has a Certified Public Accountant. I’m not sure of the requirements to be a CA in NZ, but for CPA’s you have a minimum education requirement, set by each state, a work requirement, and you have to pass the Uniform CPA Exam.
If you’ve got your sight set on being an accountant, it’s not to hard to become a CPA. For instance, the state I ilve in, you must have 150 semester hours of college credit and work at leat a year in a professional accounting setting, as well as pass the CPA Exam. Getting the education takes more effort as you can get a BS degree at most schools with only 120 hours or so. That’s at least another year of school and then you have to work and pass the exam. The exam can be rough. If you don’t study for it, you will not pass it, simple as that.
How should a self-written job description for CPA for formatted?
I am applying for my CPA license in Texas and the Board as asked for a self-written job description for my and my employer/supervisor CPA. I was wondering if there are guidelines for this, such as length, format, etc. Please help.
If you do not find guidelines, the formula that I would follow is to start with the beginning of your day and basically record what your job is for the whole week. A job description is a list of general tasks, functions and duties to complete the job.
I have written job description records for my employees to follow, know and understand what I expect of them.
Google : job description guidelines
You will find there are websites for schools that tell how to list a job description for a job opening. This might help you.
What are the requirements for CPA accreditation in the state of Oklahoma?
I work for a non-profit foundation in Tulsa, OK. We have one educational program right now and we want to start a CPA course. I need to know what the "rules" of accreditation are. I cannot find anything useful on the internet and I really don’t have time to surf anymore. Can anyone help?
I DO NOT need sarcastic or insulting answers. I live in Oklahoma and I am not stupid, nor is the majority of us here. So take your dumb insults elsewhere.
Start at the Department of Banking. They will give you the reference for the supervising agency. You can open your school tomorrow. You need instructors who are registered with the state. And you need to get the forms for graduation. You can do this in 1 week..
what is the best and most effective CPA review materials?
I plan to take CPA exam in the next 6 months. There are a lots of CPA review products in the market such as CPA excel Becker’s, Roger’s, etc. I would like to have your opinion on what is the most effective CPA reviews material based on your experience . Thank you !
Becker is widely considered the best. Put another way, all of the Big 4 (PwC, D&T, E&Y, and KPMG), BDO, BKD, and Grant Thornton all send their people through the Becker program.
From my personal experience, it works. Just stick to the program by watching the lectures and doing both the multiple choice questions and the simulations. If you do this, you should be fine. The exam is difficult, but not impossible if you have a plan and stick to it. I used the Becker program last year and passed all four section on my first try from July to November ‘07.
The down side of Becker is the price (if you have to pay for it yourself). It is more expensive than the others. I was lucky enough to be in a position that my employer paid for the cost of Becker. I am sure that other review courses would also work but I can’t speak to them personally.
Good Luck on the exam!
Is it true that CPA Australia exams are all multiple choice questions?
My colleague (originally from China), claims that she has an Australian degree & CPA. But she can’t speak - and write in English! According to her CPA papers are multiple choice questions, so it was purely luck that she passed the exams and become a chartered accountant. But it’s just strange that CPA would have a standard that low.
Well, I do not know much about that. However, it could be true. The CPA in the United States that people has to take, is also multiple choice questions too, but also a written part. There are 4 parts to take.
